Through the Good Times and the Bad

Surah An’aam, 42-45

Verily, We sent (Messengers) to many nations before you (O Muhammad SAW). And We seized them with extreme poverty (or loss in wealth) and loss in health with calamities so that they might believe with humility. (42) When Our Torment reached them, why then did they not humble themselves (believe with humility)? But their hearts became hardened, and Shaitân (Satan) made fair-seeming to them that which they used to do. (43) So, when they forgot (the warning) with which they had been reminded, We opened for them the gates of every (pleasant) thing, until in the midst of their enjoyment in that which they were given, all of a sudden, We took them (in punishment), and lo! They were plunged into destruction with deep regrets and sorrows. (44) So the roots of the people who did wrong was cut off. And all the praises and thanks are to Allâh, the Lord of the ‘Alamîn (mankind, jinn, and all that exists). (45)
  •  The message of the Prophet being addressed
  • Mushrikeen responded with hostility and confrontation to the da’wah of Prophet (S)
  • Consolation and strength being provided to the Prophet (S)
  • Other Prophets and Messengers were sent to other nations as well
  • 2 situations when they denied the message: ba’saa and dharaa – hunger and poverty & disease, illness, loss of lives and wealth
  • Why? Maybe it would humble the people and turn them to Allah swt – accept Eman, seek forgiveness, believe, submit
  • That did not happen – they were even more stubborn and hostile so they turned away – hearts became hard
  • Shaytaan beautified what they used to do – one of his biggest tricks – makes you think you’re doing right – a delusion
  • They completely missed the point of why this diffculty came – Should have been: 1) to be a test from Allah or 2) a wake-up call for those who have been sinning – but that didn’t happen
  • Then they were given extreme luxury and everything was at their avail – a very strong evidence of how merciful Allah is – but still they didn’t respond to this immense blessing of Allah
  • Baghtan – somebody taken all of a sudden and not even realizing the approach – this is how the punishment seized them
  • Iblaas – complete despair – asking for help but knowing they can’t help you
  • Each and every single one of them were completely destroyed – not even a single one remains to tell the story
  • Ends with the praise of Allah – we thank Allah for helping the believers, the Prophet – that He supported us, and didn’t make us of these people
  • Just because you find yourself in luxury – do not assume it is a blessing – it may be that last wake-up call from Allah
  • Difficulty and adversity or extreme luxury – both are massive wake-up calls
  • Cannot say one is doom or a blessing. Reassess your own situation and look at what you should be doing
  • It should be a motivation to come closer to Allah

May Allah swt give us the tawfique to better us in Ramadan and May He grant us the Tawfique to apply what we heard. Ameen.
